What the symptom is actually telling you
Draining and spinning are linked. Most washers refuse to spin until the water is gone, so a tub full of standing water usually points at a drain problem rather than a broken motor. If the machine drains fine but the drum still won't turn, that's a different path: a lid switch, a door lock, or a belt. Listen while it tries. A humming pump with no water moving means something is blocking flow. Total silence at the drain step means the machine never asked the pump to run at all. That one difference tells us where to start, and it saves a lot of guessing.
Cause family one: a clog or a kinked hose
This is the cheapest and the most common. Socks, coins, hair ties, and lint all end up in the drain pump filter. Hard water in a lot of the towns we cover leaves scale that grabs debris and builds a plug. The drain hose behind the machine can kink when the washer gets pushed back against the wall. A standpipe packed with lint will back water up too. If the pump hums but the tub stays full, think blockage. If water drains slowly instead of not at all, that's a partial clog narrowing the path.
Cause family two: lid switch, door lock, or load balance
Washers won't spin with an unlocked door. On top-loaders, a worn lid switch makes the machine think the lid is open forever. On front-loaders, the door latch assembly can crack, or the sensor stops reporting closed. Either way you get a wet load and no error you can read. Off-balance loads end the same way. A single soaked comforter slides to one side, the drum thumps, and the control cuts the spin to protect itself. Redistribute the load by hand and run a spin-only cycle. If it finishes, the machine was doing its job.
Cause family three: the pump, belt, or control board
A drain pump can fail outright. The impeller cracks, or the motor windings give up after years of well water and grit. You'll hear a buzz, or nothing. On belt-driven models, a stretched or snapped belt lets the motor run while the drum sits still. Control boards fail less often than people assume, though a bad relay can stop sending the drain command. These are the repairs where parts and diagnosis matter. Guessing gets expensive in wasted parts. We test before we replace anything, so you don't pay for the wrong fix.
Safe checks you can do, and what we do differently
Unplug the washer first. Pull it out gently and look the drain hose over for kinks or a crush point. Check that the hose end isn't shoved too far down the standpipe. Bail out the standing water with a cup and some towels. Redistribute the load and try a spin-only cycle. That's the safe list, and we'd stop there. We take it further with a meter, testing the lid switch and door lock for continuity, checking the pump for power at the connector, reading error codes stored in the control.
