What minerals actually do inside a machine
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When water heats up or sits still, those minerals come out of solution and stick to metal and rubber. In a dishwasher, scale coats the heating element and plugs the small spray holes in the arms. In a washer it stiffens hoses and fills the inlet valve screens. In a water heater it settles on the bottom as a gritty layer. Scale acts like a blanket. The element runs harder and hotter to hit the same temperature, so it wears out sooner. Flow drops. Seals dry out and crack. Nothing fails on day one, and that's exactly why the damage piles up quietly across the West's mineral-heavy water.
The one habit that prevents most of it
Run a descaling cycle. That's it. Use a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner, or plain white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe cup on the top rack, then run the hottest normal cycle with the machine empty. For a washer, use a washing-machine cleaner tablet on the clean-cycle setting, or hot water with a cup of vinegar on the longest wash. Pull the dishwasher's bottom filter out, rinse it in the sink, and scrub the basket with an old toothbrush. Wipe the door gasket while you're down there. All of it is hands-only work with no panels off and no tools. Twenty minutes total, and it keeps mineral film from hardening into crust.
How often, honestly
On well water or hard city water, once a month for the dishwasher and every other month for the washer is a reasonable rhythm. On softer water, quarterly is fine. If you don't pre-rinse dishes, rinse the dishwasher filter every couple of weeks. If you own a water softener, check the salt level monthly and keep it above the halfway mark. An empty softener means every appliance in the house goes back to raw mineral water and you'd never know. Pick a date you already remember, like the first Saturday, and tie the cleaning to that. Consistency beats intensity here. Small habits, repeated, outlast one big scrub a year.
Signs prevention time has passed
Watch for glasses that stay cloudy even after a vinegar cycle. Cycles that run long, or dishes that come out cool and wet, usually mean a scaled element. Weak spray, or a bottom rack that never gets clean, points to blocked spray holes. In the laundry room, listen for a washer that takes forever to fill, or feel for cold water when you selected hot. That's mineral-choked inlet screens most of the time. Rumbling or popping from the water heater means sediment sitting on the bottom. Rust stains, a musty smell that won't leave, a leak at a hose connection, all of it says the same thing. Cleaning won't fix it at that point. Parts need service.

Is vinegar safe for my dishwasher?
Occasional use in a cup on the top rack is fine for most machines. Heavy, frequent vinegar use can be hard on rubber seals over the years. For monthly cleaning, a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner is gentler.
Does a water softener mean I can skip cleaning?
It helps a lot, but no. Softeners run out of salt, and resin beds wear down. Detergent residue and food soil still build up anyway. Keep descaling quarterly and check your salt monthly.
Can scale damage be reversed once it's built up?
Light film usually rinses away with a descaling cycle. Hard crust bonded to a heating element or a valve screen generally doesn't come off cleanly. At that stage, replacing the affected part is the practical fix.
