What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
A dryer turns the drum and makes heat, and those two jobs run on separate paths inside the machine. When the drum still spins, the motor and belt are fine, which narrows things down fast. Either something in the heating path has stopped, or the dryer thinks it is too hot to heat safely. On electric dryers, one half of the 240-volt supply can fail while the other half still turns the motor. On gas dryers, the igniter or a safety switch may be the holdup. Same symptom, different roads. We work through them in order, cheapest and easiest first.
Cause one: blocked airflow and lint buildup
Start here, because checking costs nothing and this causes the most damage. A dryer has to push hot, wet air outside. When the vent hose is crushed behind the machine, packed with lint, or the outside flap is stuck shut, heat builds up inside the cabinet. A safety part called a thermal fuse then shuts the heat off to protect the dryer. The drum keeps spinning and nothing looks broken. In our part of the West, dryer vents in unfinished basements and long crawlspace runs collect lint quickly, and mountain-winter loads of heavy laundry make it worse. Clear the vent before replacing any part, or the new part fails too.
Cause two: a tripped or failed safety part
Every dryer has a small stack of protective parts: a thermal fuse, a high-limit thermostat, and a cycling thermostat. They are cheap, and they are designed to fail so the machine does not. When one opens, heat stops but the motor keeps running, which is exactly your symptom. These parts sit near the heat source behind panels, so we handle them and you do not. A tripped fuse is almost always a message rather than the whole story. If a vent is restricted, the fuse will open again in a few weeks. We test the part, then hunt the reason it gave up.
Cause three: the heat source itself
On an electric dryer, the heating element is a coil of wire, and it burns through eventually. That happens sooner in homes with hard well water, where mineral-heavy laundry runs long, hot cycles. A broken coil means no heat, full stop. On a gas dryer, the igniter may glow and quit, or the gas valve coils may stop opening. There is also a house-side possibility on electric models: a half-tripped double breaker. Flip the dryer breaker fully off, then back on, and try a cycle. That is a safe check. Anything past the breaker panel or involving gas lines belongs to a technician with a meter.

Why did my dryer heat fine yesterday and not today?
Safety parts fail suddenly. A thermal fuse opens in one moment, and so does a heating element or an igniter. Gradual problems look different: drying times that stretch out over weeks, usually from restricted airflow.
Does a new thermal fuse fix it for good?
Only if the reason it blew is fixed too. A fuse opens because heat built up. Clear the vent, check the outside flap, and confirm you have airflow. Otherwise the replacement fuse fails again.
