What Two Cycles Actually Tells Us
A dryer dries by moving hot air through clothes and pushing the wet air outside. Heat is only half the job. If the air can't get out fast enough, moisture stays in the drum and the clothes reheat instead of drying. That's why a dryer with a blocked vent still feels hot inside, sometimes hotter than normal. Clues we listen for: fogged door glass, a damp smell in the laundry room, lint gathering around the door seal, and an outside vent hood that barely puffs. If the drum spins and heats but the clothes stay wet, start with the air path, not the heater.
Cause One: Lint in the Screen, Trap Housing, and Vent
Cheapest first. A lint screen that looks clean can still carry a film from dryer sheets, which chokes airflow without looking dirty. Below the screen, the trap housing collects a felted mat you can't see from the top. Farther out, the flexible duct behind the dryer crushes when the machine gets pushed back tight to the wall, and lint piles up in every sag and elbow. Long runs through an attic or crawlspace collect the most. In our part of the West, mice and birds nest in exterior vent hoods over winter, and that plugs the outlet completely.
Cause Two: Vent Design and the Outside Hood
Some houses fight the dryer. A run that travels thirty feet with four elbows moves far less air than a short straight run, even when it's spotless. Foil accordion duct kinks and traps lint. Plastic duct sags. Screened vent caps clog fast because lint grabs the mesh, and roof vents in snow country can ice over or drift shut. Check that the flapper or louver on the outside hood actually swings open when the dryer runs. If it barely moves, that's your restriction. When we replace a bad run, we use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, kept as short and straight as the house allows.
Cause Three: Heat and Airflow Parts Inside
When the vent is clear and dry times are still long, the fault is inside the cabinet. Common ones: a weak or partly blocked blower wheel, a torn drum seal letting air bypass the clothes, a heating element with one broken leg on electric models, a burner that lights and drops out, or a moisture sensor reading wrong so the machine ends the cycle early. Safe Checks You Can Do in Ten Minutes
Pull the screen and hold it under running water. If water beads and pools instead of pouring through, scrub it with a soft brush and dish soap. Vacuum the slot the screen sits in. Then pull the dryer out a foot and look at the duct for kinks, crushes, or a disconnected joint blowing lint behind the machine. Go outside while the dryer runs and feel the hood. You want a strong warm push, not a trickle. Clear any nest or lint mat you can reach by hand. Run a timed load on high with the vent duct temporarily off the wall. If it dries normally, the vent is your culprit.

Can a clogged vent be a fire risk?
Yes. Lint is fuel, and a blocked vent traps heat in the duct and the cabinet. Long dry times are the earliest warning sign. Clean the screen and duct, and clear the outside hood.
How often should the vent be cleaned?
About once a year for a typical household. Sooner if you dry heavy loads daily, have pets, or your duct runs long through an attic, crawlspace, or up to a roof cap.
My dryer gets hot but clothes stay wet. Is the heater bad?
Usually not. Hot with wet clothes points to poor exhaust, since the moist air isn't leaving. Check the vent first. If airflow is strong, then we test the internal heat and sensor parts.
