Age matters, but not the way people think
A dryer is a simple machine: a motor, a heat source, a drum, a belt, and some controls. Plenty of them run well past a decade with basic care. So age by itself doesn't decide anything. How the machine has been treated matters more. A dryer vented through a long, lint-packed duct has worked harder its whole life. Heat backs up and parts cook. A dryer on a short, clean vent run in a conditioned laundry room has an easier job. Through our dry Idaho summers and cold mountain winters, vent routing shortens more dryer lives than the calendar does.
The fault type tells you most of the story
Some failures are routine. A worn belt, a bad thermal fuse, a failed thermostat, a broken door switch, noisy drum rollers. These are common wear items on nearly every brand, and swapping them is normal repair work. Other failures are heavier. A seized motor paired with a scorched control board, a cracked drum, or a rusted-through bulkhead means several major parts at once, and that's when the math shifts. One clear fault on an otherwise sound machine usually points toward repair. Three unrelated problems stacked together point the other way, and we'll say so.
Can we still get the parts?
This is the quiet dealbreaker. Common wear parts for most major brands stay available for years, including belts, fuses, switches, rollers, and heating elements. Electronic control boards are a different story. On some older or discontinued models the board is no longer made and there's no rebuilt stock anywhere. If the part doesn't exist, the repair doesn't exist, no matter how good the rest of the machine looks. We check availability before we recommend anything. If a needed part is gone, or backordered with no clear date, we tell you plainly instead of leaving you waiting on a maybe.

We start with questions. When did it change? Does it heat at all? Any burning smell, squeal, or thump? Then we test airflow at the outside vent hood, drum movement, heat and cycle behavior, and door switch response. From there we narrow it to a specific failed component instead of guessing. Once we know the fault, we look up parts and give you the picture: what's wrong, what it takes to fix, and how the rest of the machine looks. Then you decide. Sometimes the honest finding is that the dryer is fine and the vent duct is the real problem.
When replacing is the better call
There are real cases where we'd rather you buy new. A drum with a crack that catches and tears clothing. A cabinet rusted through the base from a wet basement or a slow water heater leak nearby. A control board that's been discontinued. A machine that's already had two or three major parts replaced and keeps finding new ways to fail. One more thing worth weighing: if your dryer is on its last legs and the washer next to it is the same age, replacing both at once may fit your plans better. A few safe things are worth trying. Pull the lint screen and rinse it if fabric softener has left a film, since water should pass straight through. Check the outside vent hood for a stuck flap, a lint mat, or a bird nest. Feel the exhaust flow while the dryer runs, because weak air means a blocked duct. Make sure the door latches firmly. Confirm the machine is plugged in and, for electric units, that no breaker has tripped. Skip anything behind a panel, and leave gas connections alone. If those checks come up clean, reach us.
