Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across the West
Fixable Freezer Faults, and the Ones That End a Freezer
Whether to repair or replace a failing freezer comes down to the unit's age, what actually broke, and whether parts are still available. We get that call a lot from garages and back porches across Idaho and the wider West, usually when the middle of the freezer has gone soft, the ice cream is soup, and there's a bag of elk steak somebody would rather not lose. Here's how we think it through with you.

Age matters, but it isn't the whole story
Chest freezers are simple machines. Many run fifteen or twenty years with almost nothing done to them. Uprights with auto-defrost have more parts, so more things can quit. We ask how old the unit is, then we ask what broke. A ten-year-old chest freezer with a bad lid gasket or a stuck thermostat is worth fixing. A twenty-year-old upright with a failed sealed system is a different conversation. Think too about how the freezer earns its keep. If it holds a season of garden produce and half a beef, keeping it running usually makes sense. If it holds three pizzas, maybe not.
The fault type tells us most of what we need
Some failures are routine. Thermostats, start relays, defrost heaters and timers, door switches, fans, gaskets, and drain lines all come apart and go back together, and the parts are usually stocked. Sealed-system problems are the hard line. That means the compressor, the refrigerant loop, or a leak in the coil. On a chest freezer the coil is often buried in the cabinet wall, so there's nothing to reach. When we find a sealed-system failure on an older unit, we say so plainly. You should hear that before anyone spends time on it, not after.
Whether parts still exist for your model
We check the model and serial tag before we promise anything. Older freezers and store-brand units sometimes have parts that no longer ship. Electronic control boards go out of production faster than mechanical thermostats do. If a part is discontinued with no substitute, the repair stops there, no matter how good the rest of the machine looks. Well water and hard-water areas add a wrinkle on units with ice makers or water lines, because mineral buildup shortens the life of valves and small tubing. We'll tell you if we can source what you need or if we've hit a dead end.
What we actually do on the visit
First we listen. A freezer that hums but never gets cold points one direction. One that's silent points another. We read the temperature at the middle of the load, not just at the wall. Then we look over the gasket, the lid or door seal, the frost pattern, and the coils. Frost on one side only, or a solid ice sheet on the back wall, tells us about defrost and airflow. From there we test components instead of guessing. When we're done, you get the fault in plain words, the parts involved, and our honest read on whether the repair holds up.
When we tell you to buy new instead
Replacement wins in a few clear cases. A rusted-through cabinet or a floor gone soft with corrosion can't be patched. A sealed-system failure on a unit past its expected life is rarely worth chasing. Interior liner cracks let insulation soak up moisture, and that freezer will never hold temperature again. Same goes for a chest freezer that flooded or sat outside through several desert summers. We also flag a unit stacking up repairs. Three separate failures in a year is the machine telling you something. Call us and describe what you're seeing. We'd rather steer you right than sell a repair that won't last.

Fixable Freezer Faults, and the Ones That End a Freezer — fast answers
My freezer is running but food is thawing. Emergency?
Move the food to a neighbor's freezer or into coolers with ice if you can. Otherwise keep the lid shut. Then call us. A partial-cooling freezer often has a defrost or airflow fault worth diagnosing quickly.
Is a chest freezer easier to repair than an upright?
Usually yes. Chest models have fewer parts, and in many cases no fan or defrost cycle. Uprights with auto-defrost have more components, which means more repairable failures but also more that can go wrong.
Should I defrost it before you come out?
No, leave it as-is. The frost pattern is evidence. Where ice builds up tells us about door seals, defrost heaters, and airflow. Cleaning it off first erases what we need to see.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form and describe what you hear, smell, or see. A noise, a leak, an error code, the smell of something burning. Small details help us load the right parts on the van before we head out.
- Step 2
We come look
A technician comes to your home and tests the machine instead of guessing at it. You'll hear what failed, what the fix takes, and what we'd do if this were our own kitchen.
- Step 3
Repair and check
A lot of parts ride with us, so common failures get handled on the same visit. Harder parts we order in. Then we run the appliance through a cycle and make sure the problem is actually gone.

Why homeowners call us
- Western conditions, plainlyHard well water scales up dishwasher jets and water heater lines. Summer heat leans on refrigerator compressors. Cold garages freeze washer valves in winter. We see those patterns weekly, so we check for them before chasing something exotic.
- Brand independentWe aren't tied to any manufacturer. That means we work on the mixed lineup most homes actually have: one brand of range, another brand of laundry, a fridge somebody bought used. Same technician, same visit.
- Steady, not rushedRushing is how a diagnosis goes wrong. We take the time to pull the panel, test the part, and read the board. And if a repair doesn't make sense for the age of the machine, we'll say so out loud.
- Straight schedulingYou get a real appointment window and a heads-up when the technician is on the way. Rural addresses and long mountain driveways are normal for us. Tell us about the gate or the gravel and we'll plan for it.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
- Straight answersSome machines aren't worth the part, and we say so before you spend anything.
