What a warm fridge is actually telling you
A refrigerator does not make cold. It moves heat out of the box and dumps it into your kitchen. When cooling fails, either the cold air stopped being made, the cold air stopped moving, or the heat stopped leaving. Each one has a different fix. Pay attention to the freezer. If the freezer is still hard-frozen and only the fresh food side is warm, that points to airflow. If both sides are warm, you are looking at the sealed system or a control. Listen, too. Silence, clicking, and a steady hum all mean different things.
Cheap causes first: airflow and habits
Start with the boring stuff, because it is often the answer. A bag of bread pressed against the back vent can block the air path in minutes, and an overpacked fridge does the same thing. A door bumped and left ajar by a tall bottle will warm the whole cabinet overnight. Dirty condenser coils under or behind the unit make the compressor run hot and cool poorly, and in dusty Idaho and Nevada homes with pets, that happens faster than people expect. Check the temperature dial. Kids, groceries, and cleaning day all move it. None of this costs you anything but ten minutes.
Middle ground: defrost, fans, and controls
Every frost-free refrigerator melts its own evaporator frost on a schedule. When the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer quits, ice builds into a solid block over the coil and air cannot pass through it. The freezer stays cold for a while. The fridge slowly warms, and you may hear the fan buzzing or scraping against ice. Evaporator fan failure looks about the same, and so does a failed damper that is supposed to feed cold air forward. Control boards and thermistors belong in this group as well. These parts are replaceable, and they are the most common real repairs we make on a no-cooling call.
The serious end: the sealed system
Compressors, condenser fans, start components, and refrigerant lines make up the sealed system. Signs point this way when the whole unit is warm, when the compressor is silent or clicking on and off, or when the outside of the cabinet stays cool at a spot that should feel warm from rejecting heat. Mountain-state garages complicate things. A refrigerator in an unheated garage through a Wyoming or Montana winter can stop cycling entirely because the room is colder than the thermostat expects. Sealed system work needs recovery equipment and licensing. It is not a homeowner job, and on an older unit it is worth weighing against replacement.

Safe: feel for airflow at the freezer vents, look for a wall of ice behind the rear freezer panel without removing it, close the door on a dollar bill to check the gasket for gaps, vacuum accessible coils, confirm the outlet works with another device, and set a glass of water inside with a thermometer for two hours. Not safe: pulling panels, touching wiring, or poking at anything with capacitors. When we get there, we take live temperature and current readings, test defrost components one at a time, and check system pressures. That tells us whether you need a part or a plan. Why is my freezer still cold but the fridge is warm?
That split almost always means air is not reaching the fresh food side. Usual reasons: a frosted-over evaporator coil, a failed evaporator fan, a stuck damper, or food sitting in front of the vent.
How long should I wait before calling?
If you have checked the door, the dial, and the vents and it is still warm four to six hours later, call. Waiting longer mostly costs you groceries. It does not make the diagnosis any clearer.
Should I unplug it for a day to melt the ice?
A 24-hour manual defrost can bring cooling back for a while. Treat it as a clue, not a repair. If cooling returns and then fails again, the defrost system is the problem and it needs parts.
