Ice on the walls, frost climbing the food. You chip it out and it's back three weeks later. That's not normal, even in an older freezer. Here's how to read what you're looking at.

What all that ice is actually telling you
Frost is water that came out of the air and froze on the coldest surface it could find. A sealed freezer only holds a little air, so it should only make a little frost. A thick sheet means one of two things. Either warm humid room air keeps leaking in, or the automatic defrost cycle stopped melting the normal frost off the evaporator coil. Where the ice sits tells you a lot. Ice around the door edge points at a seal, and ice packed solid behind the back panel points at defrost. Ice on the food alone usually just means the door has been open a lot.
Cause one: the door isn't sealing
This is the cheapest thing to find and often the real answer. The rubber gasket around the door gets stiff with age, and it tears at the corners. Sometimes food or an ice bin keeps the door from closing that last half inch and you never notice, because the light goes off anyway. In a dry Idaho summer that leak may be slow. Run a swamp cooler, or put the freezer in a humid basement, and moist air pours in every hour of the day. A door left ajar overnight can frost a whole box.
Cause two: the defrost system quit
Frost-free freezers grow frost on a hidden coil, then melt it off a few times a day with a small heater. A timer or control board decides when, and a sensor tells it when to stop. If the heater burns out, the sensor fails, or the board stops calling for defrost, that coil collects ice until it's a solid block. Then air can't move through it. You'll hear the freezer running constantly and a fan scraping or buzzing against ice, and the fridge side starts getting warm.
Cause three: drain, airflow, and habits
Melted defrost water leaves through a small drain tube. Hard well water and food debris clog it. Then the water backs up, refreezes, and you get a sheet of ice across the freezer floor that sometimes leaks into the fridge below. Airflow matters too. Boxes packed tight against the back vents block cold air and make frost pockets, and so does setting the freezer colder than it needs to be. A freezer in a hot garage during a Boise July works far harder, and every door opening pulls in a big slug of humid air.

Close the door on a dollar bill and pull. If it slides right out, the gasket is weak at that spot, so walk the whole door and look for cracks or flattened rubber. Wipe the gasket with warm soapy water, since sticky residue keeps it from sealing. Pull the boxes back off the rear vents. Check that the freezer sits level and the door swings shut on its own. Stop there. Don't pull the back panel and don't use a heat gun. We test the defrost heater and sensor for continuity, read the control board, check coil temperature, clear the drain line, and confirm the sealed system is holding. Call us.
