Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across the West
Ice Maker Stopped Making Ice
The bin is empty again. Maybe you hear the fill valve buzz but nothing drops. Maybe there's one sad hollow cube stuck in the mold. An ice maker that quits is annoying, and it usually is not the whole refrigerator failing. Most of the time it comes down to water getting in, cold getting there, or a small part giving up.

What an empty bin is actually telling you
An ice maker runs a simple loop. It fills with water, freezes for a set time, then twists or heats the mold to drop cubes. Anything that breaks the loop stops production. Small cubes or hollow shells mean water is arriving slowly. No cubes at all, with a dry mold, means water is not arriving. Full cubes stuck in place mean the harvest step failed. Slushy or soft cubes point at freezer temperature. Look at what is in the bin before you look anywhere else. That one detail narrows the search fast.
Cause family one: the water supply
This is the cheapest place to start and the most common. A saddle valve behind the fridge can be partly closed. A supply line can kink when the fridge gets pushed back after cleaning. Out here, well water minerals build up in the fill tube and in the valve screen until flow drops to a trickle. In cold garages and unheated back walls, that fill tube can freeze into a plug. If the dispenser water is also weak or dead, the problem is almost certainly upstream of the ice maker itself.
Cause family two: a clogged or old filter
A refrigerator water filter restricts flow as it loads up. Hard water in much of the Mountain West shortens filter life well before the calendar date. The dispenser usually slows first, but the ice maker feels it too, because it fills on a timer, not by volume. Less water in the same seconds means smaller cubes, then none. Changing the filter is homeowner work on nearly every model. Run a couple of gallons through the dispenser afterward to clear trapped air. Then give it a full day before judging the result.
Cause family three: freezer temperature and airflow
Ice makers need the freezer near zero degrees Fahrenheit. Warmer than that and the harvest cycle fires before the cubes are solid. Check the setting first. Then check for a door that is not sealing, a bin or frozen pizza blocking the vent, or frost building on the back wall. Heavy frost usually means a defrost problem, which is a repair call. A garage refrigerator in a Boise Valley summer can also struggle when ambient heat climbs past what the cabinet was designed for. Give the condenser coils a vacuum while you are back there.
What we do that you should not try at home
Once the easy stuff is ruled out, the work moves behind panels. We meter the inlet valve for the right resistance and confirm it opens when energized. We test the mold thermostat and the harvest motor, check the optical or arm-style level sensor, and look at the control board for burned traces. We thaw a frozen fill tube with controlled heat instead of a screwdriver, which cracks plastic. Voltage testing near a compressor and its start components is not homeowner territory. Call us and describe what is in the bin. That saves diagnostic time.
Ice Maker Stopped Making Ice — fast answers
How long should a new ice maker take to make ice?
Give it 24 hours after installation or a filter change. Most units drop their first batch in a few hours, but the freezer has to fully recover before production reaches normal volume.
Why does my ice smell or taste bad?
Old ice absorbs freezer odors, so dump the bin first. If new ice still tastes off, replace the water filter and check for uncovered food. Stale ice sitting for weeks is the usual answer.
Is it worth repairing an ice maker in an older fridge?
Often yes, if the refrigerator cools well and the cabinet is sound. We look at the age, what failed, and part availability, then tell you plainly what we would do.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form and describe what you hear, smell, or see. A noise, a leak, an error code, the smell of something burning. Small details help us load the right parts on the van before we head out.
- Step 2
We come look
A technician comes to your home and tests the machine instead of guessing at it. You'll hear what failed, what the fix takes, and what we'd do if this were our own kitchen.
- Step 3
Repair and check
A lot of parts ride with us, so common failures get handled on the same visit. Harder parts we order in. Then we run the appliance through a cycle and make sure the problem is actually gone.

Why homeowners call us
- Western conditions, plainlyHard well water scales up dishwasher jets and water heater lines. Summer heat leans on refrigerator compressors. Cold garages freeze washer valves in winter. We see those patterns weekly, so we check for them before chasing something exotic.
- Brand independentWe aren't tied to any manufacturer. That means we work on the mixed lineup most homes actually have: one brand of range, another brand of laundry, a fridge somebody bought used. Same technician, same visit.
- Steady, not rushedRushing is how a diagnosis goes wrong. We take the time to pull the panel, test the part, and read the board. And if a repair doesn't make sense for the age of the machine, we'll say so out loud.
- Straight schedulingYou get a real appointment window and a heads-up when the technician is on the way. Rural addresses and long mountain driveways are normal for us. Tell us about the gate or the gravel and we'll plan for it.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
- Straight answersSome machines aren't worth the part, and we say so before you spend anything.
