A Burner That Clicks But Never Lights
If your gas burner clicks but won't light, start by pulling the grate and burner cap and looking for spilled food or moisture in the ports. That fixes a fair number of these. What the symptom is actually telling you
A gas burner needs gas at the port and a spark, both at the same moment, with a clean path between them. Lose one and the failure has its own signature. Clicking with no flame usually means the spark is fine and gas is blocked or slow to arrive. No clicking and no flame points at the igniter circuit or the switch under the knob. If every burner clicks when you only turned one on, suspect moisture or a stuck switch. A flame that lights then dies in a few seconds is something else, usually the safety valve on a sealed burner. Write down exactly what you hear and see. That detail shortens the visit.
Cause one: a dirty or wet burner (start here)
Boil-overs cause most of these. Soup, pasta water, or grease runs down into the burner ports and dries into a crust, and then gas can't reach the spark point. On sealed burners the small slots around the ring clog one at a time, so you get a partial ring of flame, or nothing. Water does the same thing a different way. If you just wiped down the cooktop, or something boiled over an hour ago, moisture in the igniter well will make it click without lighting. Pull the grate, lift the burner cap, and let it air out. Plenty of burners come back on their own once they're dry.
Cause two: the igniter, switch, or spark module
Every burner has a small ceramic igniter that throws the spark. It cracks, soaks up grease, or loses its ground path. One burner dead while the others click points at that igniter or its wire. Nothing clicking anywhere sends us to the spark module, which feeds all the igniters. Clicking that never stops, even with the knobs off, usually means a switch under a knob is wet or stuck closed. Unplug the range for a minute, then plug it back in. If the clicking starts right back up, the internal parts need hands on them, and not yours.
Cause three: gas supply and the safety valve
Gas problems show up as a pattern. No burner lights but the oven works, or nothing works at all after a tank swap or a service shutoff, and the trouble is upstream. Propane homes up in the mountains see this after a refill, when air in the line takes a few tries to purge. On sealed-burner ranges, a thermocouple-style safety device has to sense flame or it shuts the gas back off, which is why the burner lights and dies. That part sits behind the burner assembly. Smell gas at any point? Stop, shut the range off, get air moving, and call your gas utility first.
Safe checks versus what we do
Safe for you: lift the grates and caps, clear the ports with a straightened paper clip, dry everything, make sure the range is plugged in, check the breaker, and see whether your other gas appliances still work. That's the list. Don't pull the cooktop surface, don't chase wiring, and leave the gas line alone. Can I light the burner with a match while I wait?
On most ranges, yes. Turn the knob to low, light the match first, then bring it near the burner. If it doesn't catch within a few seconds, shut the knob off and let the gas clear before you try again.
Why do all my burners click when I only turn one on?
On a lot of ranges the spark module fires every igniter at once, by design. Constant clicking with the knobs off is a different story. That usually means moisture in a switch, or a switch stuck closed, and it needs service.
The burner lights but goes out when I let go of the knob. Why?
That's the flame safety device. It has to sense heat to hold the gas valve open. A dirty or failing sensor never confirms the flame, so the valve shuts. It's a replaceable part sitting behind the burner.
