What happens when the filter goes years without cleaning
Food bits, grease, and paper labels build into a mat over the filter screen. Water still moves, but slower. The pump has to pull harder through a clogged screen, so spray pressure drops, and dishes on the top rack stop getting rinsed. That trapped food sits wet between loads and turns sour. That's your smell. Over time, hard grit gets pushed back through the pump and wears the seals and impeller. In areas with well water, minerals cement the debris in place until it feels like a crust. Pull the bottom rack out and look at the floor of the tub. You'll see a round filter, usually marked with an arrow or an unlock symbol. Twist it counterclockwise and lift it out. Under it there's often a flat mesh screen that lifts free too. Rinse both under the faucet, and use a soft dish brush on the mesh, nothing stiff enough to tear it. Wipe the empty well with a paper towel to grab the sludge. Drop the parts back in and twist until they seat. No tools, no panels, no power to disconnect. That's the whole job.

Once a month covers most households. If you run the dishwasher daily, or scrape plates loosely instead of rinsing, make it every two weeks. Signs prevention is already too late
Standing water in the tub bottom after a finished cycle means the drain path is restricted, not just the filter. Dishes coming out with food redeposited on them points to weak spray or a clogged spray arm. A burning or hot-plastic smell during the cycle is a stop-and-unplug situation.
