A dishwasher needs four things happening together: hot enough water, enough spray pressure, detergent that dissolves, and a drain that clears the dirty water between fills. Lose one and the dishes come out coated. The machine can't tell you which one quit. It fills, sprays, drains, and finishes on schedule no matter what. So the pattern is what we go on. Film on everything usually means water chemistry or temperature, while food stuck in one area of the rack points to blocked spray. Sandy grit in the bottom usually means the filter or the drain. First question we ask is what the dirt looks like and where it lands.
Cause family one: loading, detergent, and water temperature
Cheapest place to look, and it settles plenty of calls. Overlapping plates block spray. Tall pots on the bottom rack shadow the upper arm. Detergent that has sat in a humid cupboard for a year clumps up and quits dissolving. If your water heater is set low, or the kitchen sits a long way from it, the first fill comes in cool and the detergent never activates. Run the kitchen faucet hot before you start a cycle. And skip the habit of rinsing dishes spotless first, because some detergents need a little soil to work against.
Cause family two: hard water and mineral buildup
Across much of Idaho, Utah, and Nevada, well water and city water both come loaded with minerals. Calcium coats the tub, the heating element, and the small spray holes. Glasses come out cloudy and stay that way. Over months the arm holes narrow until the spray turns into a dribble. A citric acid dishwasher cleaner run on the hottest cycle takes off a fair amount of it. Rinse aid helps water sheet off instead of drying into spots. On a well, the minerals keep coming, so this turns into maintenance instead of a one-time repair. Scale also masks other problems, since everything starts looking like buildup.
Safe checks you can do in ten minutes
Shut the power off at the switch or the breaker first. Pull the bottom rack out. Twist out the cylinder filter and rinse it under the tap with a soft brush. Ours come out gray and greasy all the time. Clear the coarse screen around it. Spin both spray arms by hand and feel for drag, then hold one up to the light and poke the stuck holes with a toothpick. Make sure the little flap on the detergent cup opens freely. Look behind the unit for a hard kink in the drain hose. Stop there. Leave the lower access panel and any wiring alone.

Should I rinse dishes before loading?
Scrape the bones and big chunks off, but skip the full rinse. Modern detergents need some food soil to grab. Dishes rinsed spotless sometimes come out etched or filmed over instead of clean.
Why are my glasses cloudy but the plates fine?
That is mineral film almost every time, not dirt. Glass shows it first. Run a citric acid cleaner cycle and add rinse aid. If vinegar wipes it off, it is scale from hard water.
Can a clogged filter really stop it from cleaning?
