Summer heat pushes refrigerators and freezers hard
When the garage hits 105, the second fridge out there struggles. Compressors run longer, condenser fans work overtime, and dust that settled all winter turns into a blanket. Warm milk and soft ice cream in a fridge that never used to complain is usually a cooling system that can't shed heat. Pull the fridge out and vacuum the coils and the grille at the bottom. Give it a few inches of breathing room from the wall. Keep garage units out of direct sun through a window. If the freezer holds but the fresh food side warms up, call us.
Winter cold slows garage and utility-room machines
Cold does odd things. A washer in an unheated laundry room can freeze a line overnight, and you get a machine that fills slowly or not at all. Garage refrigerators sometimes stop cooling the freezer in winter, because the thermostat reads a cold room and never calls for the compressor. Dryers vent into freezing air, so lint packs into damp clumps inside the duct. Before the first hard freeze, check that the laundry room stays above freezing and confirm the dryer vent flap outside opens and closes freely instead of icing shut.
Hard water and minerals wear things down all year
Well water and hard municipal water leave scale everywhere. In dishwashers, it clouds glasses, plugs spray arm holes, and stiffens the inlet valve. In washers, it builds in the hoses. Water heaters collect sediment that makes popping or rumbling sounds. Ice makers slow down and make small, hollow cubes. Twice a year, run a dishwasher cleaner through an empty cycle and poke the spray arm holes clear with a toothpick. Change your fridge water filter on schedule. If a dishwasher leaves grit on the bottom after every load, mineral buildup is a good first suspect.
Spring and fall bring dust, pollen, and airflow trouble
Wind season coats everything. Dryer vents pick up cottonwood fluff, refrigerator coils gather a felt of dust and pet hair, and range hood filters go greasy and clogged. Airflow problems look like other problems. A dryer that takes three cycles, a fridge that runs constantly, a hood that no longer clears smoke: all of those often trace back to blocked air. Each spring and fall, disconnect the dryer duct at the wall and clear it. Wash the range hood filter in hot soapy water, and vacuum the fridge coils. These take an hour and prevent a service call.
A short pre-season checklist for each shift
Before summer: clean refrigerator coils, verify the garage fridge has clearance, and check that the freezer door seal grips a dollar bill snugly. Before winter: clear the dryer vent, insulate or protect exposed laundry lines, and make sure the outside vent flap moves. Any season, listen. New buzzing, grinding, or clicking is information. Look under the washer and dishwasher for damp spots. Feel the dryer exhaust outside, because weak airflow means a clog.
